Celebrating Magnificent Meadows Day at Rough Bank

Today is National Meadows Day and our Rough Bank reserve is a wonderful example of a species-rich grassland. On this walk the main emphasis will be on the summer butterflies - we especially hope to see Small Skipper, Chalk Hill Blue, Dark Green Fritillary, Small Heath, Marbled White and Gatekeeper - but the wildflowers and other plants that they require will also be pointed out.

Crickley Hill Bioblitz

Crickley Hill is one of the finest examples of unimproved limestone grassland in the county and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its rich diversity of wildflowers such as yellow wort, carline thistle, autumn gentian and clustered bellflower. Big Butterfly Count

The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world's biggest survey of butterflies. Over 52,000 people took part in 2015, counting over 580,000 individual butterflies and day-flying moths across the UK.

Lower Woods is one of the largest ancient woodlands in the south-west of England and covers three square kilometres. The reserve has 23 woods and coppices whose boundaries have remained unchanged for several centuries. The rich woodland flora includes carpets of bluebells in spring, with early purple and greater butterfly orchids and herb paris. In summer look for old meadow species including ragged-robin, common-spotted orchids, betony and devils-bit scabious and butterflies like white admiral and silver washed fritillary. On this…

The Butterfly Nectar Garden at Prinknash is part of the walled garden owned by the monks at Prinknash Abbey, near Cranham, Gloucester GL4 8EX. Members of the Branch will be on hand to answer questions about the Big Butterfly Count, butterflies and plants and Butterfly Conservation in general. No charge for the garden entry. There is a large car park and a café.

Please note this walk is on Saturday 6th August. Coombe Hill is a 15.4-hectare (38-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire. The site lies within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Cotswold Hills Environmentally Sensitive Area. The hill is a large, unimproved limestone grassland pasture area, with an ungrazed area and an edge of broadleaved woodland (along the western boundary). This site is of special notification because of its large area of flower rich grassland.…
